Sale of Governor’s Residence Would Save PA Taxpayers Millions
6/9/2010

Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver), in an effort to reduce current and future expenditures by the Commonwealth, is seeking cosponsors for legislation he will soon introduce calling for the sale of the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg. Proceeds from such sale would go into Pennsylvania’s general fund.

“Financial responsibility starts at home,” Christiana said. “By selling the governor’s mansion through a competitive bidding process, hard-working Pennsylvania families would not only benefit from the immediate proceeds, they would save several million dollars down the road in associated costs and luxuries such as upkeep, security, and a full-time personal chef. The daunting list to keep the 3.2 acre, 32 room mansion running goes on and on.”

In lieu of the state providing a permanent dwelling, Christiana’s legislation calls for reimbursing the standing governor for limited legislative-related expenses.

“My legislation would allow for the reimbursement of lodging expenses for the governor that are incurred while conducting official business in Harrisburg,” Christiana added.  “Simple math demonstrates Pennsylvania would save a substantial amount of money each and every year. We are experiencing an economic crisis and I believe we should take action on reducing our expenses, not raise taxes on families and businesses.”

More information, as it becomes available, will be posted at Christiana’s website at RepChristiana.com.
